Best Biomedical Engineering Schools of 2023
ThisisEngineering RAEng

Biomedical engineering, sometimes abbreviated as BME, is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering to biology and medicine. With the increasing sophistication of healthcare systems, biomedical engineering has grown as an area of study for many college students, whether it’s on the undergraduate or graduate level.

BrokeScholar conducted a study to identify the best biomedical engineering schools. Every single state was analyzed in terms of their public and private, not-for-profit colleges and their degrees awarded in biomedical engineering. The study reveals that many of the best biomedical engineering schools are large, public research colleges, as well as private colleges traditionally recognized for their strong academic record. In our study, many states have several best biomedical engineering schools (see the methodology section for more details).

Read on to find out the best biomedical engineering schools in the US and in every state.

The Bottom Line on the Best Biomedical Engineering Schools

As you can see from the above list, there are plenty of excellent biomedical engineering schools. They offer a variety of programs in the biomedical engineering field proper as well as programs in related biomedical sciences, which can make choosing a major tough because many of them are so enticing.

However, biomedical engineering is no easy street. It is a field of study that carries many prerequisites and requirements across a variety of disciplines, not unlike majoring in chemistry. So, if you do have a strong interest in biomedical engineering, make sure to read up on all the requirements listed by your college of choice. At the same time, since biomedical engineering falls under the broader field of engineering, be sure to check out BrokeScholar's vast library of engineering scholarships. Winning one of these can help you save some money as you pursue your goal of becoming a biomedical engineer.

Methodology

In order to determine the best biomedical engineering schools, we sourced data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). In order to qualify for our list, institutions had to:

  • Award bachelor’s degrees (at a minimum)
